++ DESIGN AND WONDROUS - THE NATURE OF ORNAMENTATION

This winter, the MAMC+ gives carte blanche to Marie-Ange Brayer, Head Curator at the National Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou. She has conceived “Design and wondrous” especially for the MAMC+, to bring to a close the cycle of exceptional exhibitions for the museum’s 30th anniversary and to herald the 11th International Biennial of Design of Saint-Etienne.

The advent of the digital era has profoundly modified the notion of ornamentation in design. The ornamental form has been liberated, now blossoming out in a calculated dimension of transformation, of morphogenesis which draws its dynamics from the growing processes of nature. Ornamentation is no longer a simple notion of pattern, but asserts itself as an “animated” and generative form. Within this new digital grammar, ornamentation opens up to the notion of “wondrous” establishing a continuity “between the natural and the supernatural” (Etienne Souriau).

This exhibition may itself turn into a digital “Cabinet of curiosities”, telling an original story of design through one hundred major works from French and International designers, essentially drawn from the collections of the Mnam/CCI, the Centre Pompidou, the FNAC …

Curator of the exhibition: Marie-Ange Brayer, chief curator, Industrial Design and Prospective, Mnam-Cci, Centre Pompidou and Martine Dancer-Mourès, Head Curator of the MAMC+ and programming director of the 30th anniversary.

++ TWENTY-FOUR HOURS IN THE LIFE OF A WOMAN - COLLECTION OF THE MAMC+ / DURING ONE DAY, ONE NIGHT

Based on works from the collections of the Saint-Etienne Metropolitan Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, this exhibition relates the romantised life of a woman, during one day and one night.

From awakening through to darkness, more than 300 works, paintings, drawings, photographs and design objects from the 19th century to today, accompany a sequence of daily events, giving rise to unexpected moments. Bathing, working, reading or walking punctuate a morning, an afternoon, while a party and night-goers inspire eccentricities, dreams and other strange thoughts.

Atmospheres, formal associations and art’s synthesis are brought together to reveal both major and unknown works in an imaginary and poetic dialogue. From Claude Viallat to Ettore Sottsass, from Victor Brauner to Robert Filliou, from Sonia Delaunay to Jochen Gerz, Twentyfour hours in the life of a woman, a title taken from the eponymous book by Stefan Zweig, deconstructs customary or chronological aesthetic categories to relate another form of art history through fiction.

The exhibition demonstrates the extraordinary wealth of the Saint-Etienne Metropolitan Modern and Contemporary Art Museum’s collection, with its numerous works summoning references to histories both great and small, the intimate and the universal.

Curator of the exhibition: Aurélie Voltz, General Director of the Museum.

++ HEADBANGERS BALL - DAMIEN DEROUBAIX

In partnership with the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Strasbourg, theMAMC+ organises an exhibition devoted to Damien Deroubaix, a major artist of the Saint-Etienne scene of the 1990’s. The Museum grants him free rein for the occasion of the 30th anniversary, following on from the exhibitions dedicated to Valérie Jouveand Jean-Michel Othoniel.

Under the heading Headbangers Ball – taken from the name of the cult MTV music programme devoted to metal at the beginning of the 90’s – the artist presents his latest unpublished pictorial works, resituated in the musical context to which he has been particularly attached since his very first works.

A graduate of the Fine Art Schools of Saint-Etienne and Karlsruhe, Germanophile and Germanspeaking, having lived for some ten years in Berlin, Damien Deroubaix now works between Meisenthal and Paris. A painter and engraver, he produces installations reflecting the constitutive themes of his work. His artistic references, Jérôme Bosch, Manet, Picasso, the Dada movement and the photomontages of John Heartfield, combine with ancestral themes such as the Dance of Death … He also draws on the Grindcore aesthetic and for several years has been exploring the field of primitive art.

He has chosen to devote the exhibition in Saint-Etienne to his vision of painting, through a collection of works relating to major themes (the muse, life, death, Lunch on the grass …), grand self-portraits of the artist reflecting his obsessions (Guernica, Pablo, Delacroix, Totentanz …), presented next to a glass sculpture, Putrefacio. Finally the outside world with the influencing sources which have fashioned his work: the theme tune of the Headbangers ball, video extracts of the film “Mystère Picasso” by Clouzot, “Pierrot le fou” by Jean-Luc Godard, excerpts from Modern Times by Charlie Chaplin, the “Valseuses”…

From April 6th to August 25th, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Strasbourg will present Headbangers Ball II - Bearer of Light. A joint catalogue of the two exhibitions will be published for the occasion.

Curator of the exhibition : Martine Dancer-Mourès, Head Curator of the MAMC+ and programming director of the 30th anniversary.

++ FROM MONET TO SOULAGES - PATHS TO MODERNITY 1800-1980 - PEKIN - CHENGDU - WUHAN - SAINT-ÉTIENNE

The MAMC+ has been the initiator of an exceptional international project. From May 2017 to April 2018, 51 masterpieces from its ancient, modern and contemporary art collections were exhibited in China, attracting a million visitors. The public will discover this exhibition in Saint-Etienne as the closing event of the Museum’s 30th anniversary programme.

Through some of the finest works from its collections the Saint-Etienne Metropolitan Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art proposes an exhibition recalling the transforming revolutions in the history of French art since the beginning of the 19th century. The visitor will discover these “Paths to modernity”, from realism to the most contemporary painting, through Impressionism, Symbolism, Cubism, Surrealism and the abstract movements. Numerous paintings by the Grand Masters of European painting from the last centuries - Monet, Courbet, Matisse, Picasso, Soulages, Dubuffet…- will feature in the exhibition, under the curatorship of Martine Dancer-Mourès, Head Curator of the MAMC+ and programming director of the 30th anniversary.

Organised with the support of the French Institute for the “Croisement” festival, this travelling exhibition was presented at the Art Museum of the University of Tsinghua in Beijing, from May to August 2017. It was then hosted at the Municipal Museum of Chengdu, from September to December 2017 and finally at the Wuhan Art Museum from December 2017 to April 2018. In total a million Chinese visitors had the opportunity to discover the Saint-Etienne collection, a record for an exhibition of French art in China.

Curator of the exhibition: Martine Dancer-Mourès, Head Curator of the MAMC+ and programming director of the 30th anniversary.

++ RINGOLEV.IO COSMIQUE - PARTNERS PRIZE 2017 - MAXIME DUVEAU

A guest of the Saint-Etienne Metropolitan Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, for the 8th edition of the Partners Prize, Maxime Duveau is an artist fascinated by the United States and California in particular. He has travelled in time and in space over many years to appropriate a collective imaginary world. His work combines drawings using charcoal, brush and India ink, adhesive tape, box cutters and scriptural images.

Before venturing off to L.A. the artist had appropriated its universe, a city of personal and collective mythologies, a city of excess. Los Angeles and its artists so present in our memories: Ed Rusha or John Baldessari, David Lynch or Dan Fante, Thomas Pynchon... The exhibition is placed under the sign of Ringolevio, a violent game played by teenagers in the streets of the Bronx or Brooklyn, also the title of a book by Emmett Grogan, a monument of the counterculture movement, an autobiography of an American Robin Hood.

The artist came back from his stay in Los Angeles with a host of photographs on which he could draw. From the Angelinos spirit comes the random chance, the wealth of links between literary, photographic and pictorial disciplines … The boundary is very fine in this work, oscillating between factual reality and fiction. The finish of the motifs, the alternation of shading interspersed with blurred effects, seem to signify a form of distancing, obtained by placing strips of adhesive tape like a veil which is then gradually torn apart.

Maxime Duveau resorts to experimentation, to manipulations both of images and of words. With its nonexistent pagination and leaves deliberately unbound, the novel which accompanies the exhibition responds to the same logic: setting up a smokescreen, evading any unequivocal interpretation. A real paper chase where the artist scatters around a few clues allowing the reader to move within his labyrinth.

With RingoleV.io Cosmique visitors oscillate between certitudes and uncertainty.

Curator of the exhibition: Martine Dancer-Mourès, Head Curator of the MAMC+ and programming director of the 30th anniversary.
